Matale Line creative directors Paul Singer and Brad Roberts recently traveled with the U.S. Fund for UNICEF to Mozambique, a country whose beauty belies its tribulations. The population in this once-wartorn African country is 20 million (half are children). The poverty rate is 54 percent. And the HIV/AIDS infection rate is more than 16 percent. Life expectancy is 37. Paul and Brad saw firsthand how UNICEF and its partners are making a difference in the lives of women and children, especially in the areas of child survival and education. Of all their indelible experiences, two in particular, they say, stand out. One, how generous and inquisitive and welcoming the people of Mozambique are. And, two, how extraordinary the UNICEF Mozambique staffers are, especially hosts Thierry Delvine-Jean and Christiane Rudent (photos 1 and 2, respectively). “In them,” say Paul and Brad, “we saw so much good, so much selflessness, so much determination.”
