South Africa is at the bottom of the most forgotten continent in the world. Yet it became a case study in what is possible when people rise above—and forgive. The Truth and Reconciliation Committee that followed the end of Apartheid is one of the most profound examples of hope in human history. Humble people, who suffered grave injustices, chose reconciliation over retaliation, and, in doing so, became an eternal example for the entire world. “During our travels with Oprah’s Angel Network,” notes Bill Toliver, executive director of The Matale Line, “it became clear, that the work in South Africa is far from over.” HIV/AIDS has killed an entire generation of black South African adults, and now their children are left to fend for themselves in the slums of Soweto. Poverty is rampant. Girls are unsafe. But, as Bill reminds, there are many—Oprah’s Angel Network and UNICEF among them—who are striving tirelessly to bring hope back.
